Less than 24 hours removed from putting on one of their most inspired performances of the season, the Los Angeles Lakers fell to the last place Phoenix Suns, 118-109.
The Lakers have now lost to each of the bottom-three teams in the NBA once this season. This particular loss, though, is the worst of the worst.
With a loss to the Suns, the Lakers are now 4.5 games back of the eighth seed in the Western Conference. They’re just as close to having the eighth pick in the draft as they are the eighth seed in the West. For those that have been following along, there are only 19 games left in the season.
But, it’s not all bad! I mean, look on the bright side: the Lakers signed LeBron James! Remember when they did that? That was so cool!
Then, they surrounded him with a veteran supporting cast while maintaining cap flexibility for this summer. As it stands, the Lakers are expected to have roughly $33 million in cap space for this summer’s stacked free agency class.
Who wouldn’t want to play in Los Angeles with James, a brand new coach (their third in five years), and an exciting core of young players that could be shipped out at any second? Who would pass up that opportunity?
The Lakers will be back at it on Monday to take on the Clippers. Make sure to tune in, or don’t. It doesn’t matter. The season is over.
Instead, I would encourage you all to putting on your scouting hats and get ready for the NBA Draft Lottery in May.
