For the third consecutive season, the Los Angeles Lakers made a trade at the NBA trade deadline. However, unlike the previous trades, the moves they made this year weren’t as well-received.
On this week’s episode of “Can You Dig It?”, Grant Goldberg and I breakdown the trades the Lakers made, starting with the trade that sent that Ivica Zubac and Michael Beasley to the Los Angeles Clippers for Mike Muscala.
Muscala gives the Lakers a big body that can space the floor, but was he worth giving up Zubac, who was set to hit unrestricted free agency this summer?
We also talked about who could fill the roster spot that was opened as a result of that trade. Carmelo Anthony has been heavily linked to the Lakers since his departure from the Houston Rockets in November. but there will be other — and arguably better — options for Los Angeles as they prepare for their late-season playoff push, including, but not limited to, Wayne Ellington, Robin Lopez and Enes Kanter.
Finally, we discuss the next step for the Lakers after they struck out on Davis. Should they try and make another attempt at Davis this summer with the same package they offered earlier this week, or should they shift their attention to superstar free agents like Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler?
Do All-Star free agents even see the Lakers as an attractive destination after the way they handled their trade negotiations for Davis? Only time will tell, but things aren’t looking great for the Lake Show right now.
