Both sides head into the meeting in Lucerne on Sunday knowing that a victory could see them finish top of Group A2

Belgium will be looking to maintain their 100 per cent winning record in the UEFA Nations League when they travel to Switzerland.

The Red Devils beat Iceland 2-0 on Thursday thanks to a Michy Batshuayi double, to add to their two previous victories in League A Group 2.

Switzerland, on the other hand, have six points from their opening three games of the tournament, with their only defeat coming in October’s 2-1 loss to Belgium.

They will be hoping to bounce back from an embarrassing defeat to Qatar on Wednesday evening, when the Swiss were on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline against the hosts of the 2022 World Cup – and the 96th-ranked side in the world.

It’s not quite a winner-takes-all clash on Sunday, but Switzerland manager Vladimir Petkovic knows his side will top the group with a 1-0 or 2-1 win, or if they can claim victory by two or more clear goals.

For Belgium, their task is much simpler – win or draw and they qualify for the final four tournament in 2019. Should they win, Roberto Martinez’s men could also become the first side in the top tier of the Nations League to claim maximum points in the group – only Portugal can do likewise.

With Iceland losing all four games, both teams know they cannot finish bottom and be relegated to League B.

Belgium last travelled to Switzerland in 2016, for a pre-European Championship friendly. The Red Devils won 2-1 on that occasion thanks to goals from Lukaku and De Bruyne.

The Manchester United forward was also on the scoresheet when the sides met last month in Brussels. If available, he could once again prove to be the difference between the sides, given his superb recent record on the international stage.

Lukaku has notched an impressive five goals in four games for Belgium following the World Cup.

“We’ll take it day by day, see how he feels and we’ll take it [him playing] into consideration,” Martinez commented recently on the striker’s fitness levels.
