Working on a little exercise today. I went back 10 years in the Liga MX archives to see when was the last time the league's "Big 4", America, Chivas, Cruz Azul, and Pumas, were all among the league's top 5 table toppers.
There were some seasons where it was close, there were 3 in the top four a few times, and 4 were in the top 7. But going back to 2004, it had not happened until 7pm Guadalajara time last night, when Chivas scored 2 goals in a game for the first time in yonks to defeat Queretaro 2-1.
Cruz Azul has 19 out of a possible 21 points, and leads the league. They won their over the weekend thanks to Marco Fabian, the out-of-favor Chivas product on loan to the cementeros, who scored the goal of the Liga MX season so far. Judge for yourself.

After a hot start, Club America has slipped a little, dropping their last two decisions by the minimum score to Pachuca and Morelia. They hope to right the ship this weekend vs. Pumas, who have not lost in 4 games. With 11 points, they have matched their output from the A13 season.
Chivas has 12, which also matches the total points they collected last fall.
So, should we expect these teams to stay on course? Why not? Cruz Azul has historically been very consistent, while Club America as of late has been on the stronger sides in the league. The surprises have surely come from Chivas and Pumas, who can point to some form of stability (finally) to help them become a little more consistent. Can they all make the liguilla? Sure. And it would be the first time since 2011 that all 4 will have played post-season futbol.
