Continuing my list of the Top Ten Solo goals in the hhistory of the EPL.
5) Matt Le Tissier: Blackburn v Southampton, 10th December 1994
Matt Le Tissier was one of the most skilful players ever to have played in the Premier League, and definitely the most skilful player from the Channel Islands (a group of islands near the coast of France, but belonging to the British Crown). Le Tissier was a human highlight reel, scoring many spectacular goals, but this strike against Blackburn was one of his best. Picking the ball up on the halfway line, ‘Le God’ twists and turns his way into the Blackburn half, then unleashes an unstoppable shot from 40 yards into the top corner, giving Tim Flowers no chance.
4) Tony Yeboah: Leeds United v Wimbledon 23 September 1995
Yeboah was one of those players who used to specialise in the spectacular. He was one of the bright sparks in what was a pretty dull Leeds team in the mid-90’s. This goal against Wimbledon exemplifies his ability to create something out of nothing. He chests down a half-cleared ball, controls it with his thigh, then the inside of his left foot, uses his knee then smashes the ball from 25 yards, off the underside of the bar and in. Unsurprisingly, this was voted Goal of the Season.
About a month prior to this goal, Yeboah scored an equally stunning goal against Liverpool with one of the hardest-hit shots I’ve ever seen.
3) Dalian Atkinson: Wimbledon v Aston Villa, 3 October 1992
This was the best goal scored in the Premier League’s inaugural season. Atkinson runs from deep in his own half, survives a few of the Wimbledon players attempts to tackle/foul him and then hits an exquisite chip from outside the area, which sails over Dave Beasant to land perfectly in the top corner. This goal is even more remarkable considering that Atkinson was an average player at best, not renowned for his skills, but scores a goal that the world's best would be proud of.
2) Matt Le Tissier: Southampton v Newcastle, 24th October 1993
This was another amazing sequence of skill from Le Tissier, and it’s easy to see why England fans were frustrated he only won 8 caps, as there was no other player like him at the time. The ball was knocked down slightly behind him, but without breaking stride, he flicked his over his head with his heel, then flicked it over two Newcastle defenders before scoring. The only reason this goal is not number one is that, by Le Tissiers own admission, he scuffed the shot, which means that it falls slightly short of perfection. If you watch the celebration, you’ll see former Premier League manager Micky Adams. Also, for some reason I really wanted to play Street Fighter II after watching this again!
1) Rod Wallace: Leeds United v Spurs, 17th April 1994
No, not the Portland one! This goal won Goal of the Season for the 93/94 season, and it’s easy to see why. Again, the distance Wallace runs before scoring enhances how impressive this goal is. Wallace gets the ball in the defensive third of the season and it looks as though the two spurs players have him contained. However, some fast footwork by Wallace sees him beat both men, plus a third who lunges in, giving Wallace space to run into. He then ran across the right-back before curling one into the top corner. In my opinion, this is the best solo goal ever scored in the
Premier League
