Wallabies lock Dean Mumm has extended his NSW contract for one year.

Despite speculation that Mumm might call it a day this season, the 32-year-old has re-committed to the Waratahs for one more season.

The utility forward returned to NSW last season after three years with Exeter, almost immediately slotting into the Wallabies squad for the 2015 World Cup.

Mumm has played a mix of positions this season, switching between the back row and the second row for NSW, before a call up to the Wallabies squad again.

That utility role may become even more crucial next season, with the departure of Dave Dennis (Exeter).

Since the end of the Super Rugby season, Mumm has proven his worth with the Wallabies, adding some late impact for the side in the recent Bledisloe Cup series.

The Waratahs have also brought in new lock Leon Power, who joins the club from France’s Oyonnax.

Power has 20 Brumbies caps, having played in Canberrs from 2012 to 2014.

Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson said the pair would be handy mentors for their next generation of second rowers, led by promising talent Ned Hanigan.

“Both Leon and Dean are quality players with a wealth of knowledge,” he said.

“The lineout is a key growth area for us next season. We need to be able to win quality ball and these two players have the ability to analyse and lead that.

“Their experience will provide a good balance with the new talent coming through the team.

“They will help to develop and nurture the next generation of NSW locks in Ned Hanigan, Senio Toleafoa, Ryan McCauley and Will Skelton.”
