Hillary Clinton is taking in stride the number of times she was attacked by President Donald Trump in his speech launching his reelection campaign.
In his speech Tuesday night in Orlando, Fla., Trump returned to the dark, nativist roots of his 2016 campaign but also displayed a laser focus on one political opponent who’s not even in the 2020 race: Clinton.
By some counts, the president invoked the former secretary of State, his 2016 rival, at least seven times before even mentioning any of the two dozen Democrats looking to unseat him next year, railing repeatedly against “crooked Hillary” or the scandal over her private emails that dogged her 2016 campaign. The packed event even featured crowd chants of “lock her up,” which were a staple of Trump’s 2016 rallies.
Clinton on Wednesday responded to a tweet from former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum in which he exclaimed: “You must be EXHAUSTED! Cause you’ve been running through @realDonaldTrump small mind for a LONG time.”
“I can handle it. Blessed with stamina,” Clinton said on Twitter. “And thankfully I didn’t stay up late last night watching InfoWars…”
Clinton’s jab is an apparent reference to Trump’s attacks on her health in 2016, unsubstantiated digs he’s since repackaged to hurl at a fellow septuagenarian, former Vice President Joe Biden, and even House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Clinton has been on the president’s mind nearly daily, it seems, as he has complained of a double standard over the way investigations into her private emails were handled versus the way investigations into obstruction of justice and Trump’s ties to Russia were handled.
He also returned Tuesday night to Clinton’s use of the word “deplorables” at a 2016 fundraiser to describe some Trump supporters, a moniker that Trump and his allies co-opted for themselves. “That’s the problem with politics,” the president said with a smirk after recounting how it backfired on Clinton. “One word and your career is ruined.”
Trump even continued to mention Clinton well into Wednesday, accusing her of obstructing justice by deleting some of her emails.
