BRUNSWICK, GA — The United States Coast Guard says rescuers on Monday night rescued four crew members who were trapped after the cargo vessel Golden Ray capsized in St. Simons Sound in Brunswick.
The vessel caught on fire and capsized early Sunday morning. The Coast Guard has rescued all 24 crew members on board. Twenty crew members made it off the ship on Sunday, while the remaining four were unaccounted for until Monday.
CNN reported that rescuers had to pull back from the overturned ship Sunday after fires broke out inside the vessel. Rescuers are not sure where the four South Korean crew members are located inside the ship, which has watertight doors, numerous compartments and no power, Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Luke Clayton told CNN.
Rescuers found the remaining four crew members after drilling a hole into the ship’s hull. At 8:15 p.m. Monday the Coast Guard tweeted photos of rescuers with the four crewmen after they were freed.

The Coast Guard in Charleston, South Carolina, was notified around 2 a.m. by 911 dispatchers that the boat had capsized in St. Simons Sound. The vessel’s master and chief engineer are assisting authorities to come up with a plan to stabilize the vessel and continue rescue efforts.
An emergency safety zone is in place near the capsized vessel, which is laid over on its side.
The cause is under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board is assisting the Coast Guard to investigate the cause.
