WESLEY CHAPEL, FL — Law enforcement officers who spend countless hours tracking down homicide suspects might want to take their cue from Pasco County Sheriff’s Deputy Christpher Seltman.

On Saturday, Oct. 6 at 4:10 a.m., Seltman stopped by the Rac Trac gas station at 27140 State Road 56 to buy a drink. As he was leaving the convenience store, a man with blood covering the front of his clothes approached the deputy, saying he wanted to turn himself in for the murder of his estranged wife.

The man, Marco Stephens, 29, confessed to Seltman that he killed his wife in Jacksonville. While driving south on Interstate 75, he said he was debating whether to kill himself or turn himself in. Seeing Seltman at the gas station helped him make up his mind.

Seltman checked with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, which confirmed it was investigating the homicide of Stephens’ estranged wife. wife.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, around 12:30 a.m., deputies received a call from a resident who reported hearing shots fired at the Cross Creek Apartments on Manotak Avenue in Jacksonville.

When deputies arrived, they discovered Ashley Stephens, 34, shot to death in the parking lot of the apartment complex.

A witness saw Marco Stephens fleeing the scene in his estranged wife’s car. He didn’t stop until he reached Pasco County less than four hours later.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s detectives promptly drove to Pasco County to interview and formally arrest Stephens.

Stephens is currently in the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center awaiting extradition back to Jacksonville,
