In Pool B some surprises happened yesterday. Brazil lost second time in a row. Bernardo Rezende can´t be satisfied after the first weekend.
First, Canada stood against Brazil. It may seemed like it was going to be a quick game, but you couldn’t be more wrong. The first set was about long series of points for one of the teams. Canada achieved 8:2 lead, but than Brazil got back in the game thanks to Dante Amaral. In the next step, hosts made another few-points advantage and it was obviously enough, because they won 25:23. Brazil was pretty mad about it, so they did everything to not let that happen again. They won the second part with a great support of Dante and Wallace. The next set was a brilliant game of Canadians. They grab a safe lead and won easily. Brazil made it into tie break. It was once again a real concert played by the hosts. They scored some points ahead and nothing could stop them anymore.
Canada – Brazil 3:2 (25:23, 20:25, 25:20, 24:26, 15:10)
Fred Winters (captain of Canada): In my nine years with the national team, I had never beaten Brazil’s A team before. It was a great treat for the fans and the TV audience and I’m glad they got to see the hard work the players and staff put into this. Hopefully, we can keep surprising a lot of people and have more success against Poland.
Glenn Hoag (coach of Canada): I’m happy with the win, but I’m even more happy with how the guys played. Brazil is a team that I study all the time and to beat them is really a honour. The World League is a big opportunity for us to play big matches and this experience will pay off.
Bruno Rezende (captain of Brazil): Canada played well especially with the serve and that’s hard to defend against. It’s disappointing. I can’t remember the last time we started the World League so badly. We really have to win tomorrow to keep our hopes alive to make the final round.
Bernardo Rezende (coach of Brazil): It was a great performance for Canada and well deserved for all the hard work they’ve put in. We have a lot of success and teams always want to beat us. We have to forget and get ready for tomorrow. Being in the World League final is very important for us in our Olympic preparation.
And hour an a half later, Poland faced Finland. The first set of this game was various. The leader was changing every minute. In the end Polish players kept their cold blood and scored, while Finland made some mistakes and that determined the victory. The next part was quite similar, but this time Finland had more luck. In the third set Finns started with a good blocks on Polish team and they achieved big lead right after (9:3). In a short time it was 2:1 Finland. Poles were able to catch it up and make a tie-break. In this last set, Finland was strongly better. They started with 4:1, and than it was 10:4 and 12:6, so Polish team didn’t really have a chance on this one. This match was finished by Ojansivu, who was a real star of the game – he scored 29 points for his team.

Poland – Finland 2:3 (25:23, 23:25, 21:25, 25:22, 9:15)
Marcin Mozdzonek (Polish captain): We are disappointed with ourselves to not get the victory. This was a really good lesson but what doesn’t kill us will only make us stronger.
Andrea Anastasi (Polish coach): I’m disappointed to lose but sometimes this just happens. We played different tonight and didn’t have the right attitude, focus or concentration. When you play bad, you lose.
Tuomas Sammelvuo (Finnish captain): I’m proud of my team We really needed this win against a great team. We played with a great attitude. Our attacking was clever and we covered a lot of balls with great plays from our opposite and setter.
Pekka Lahtinen (Finnish coach): The players trusted themselves and I’m very proud of them. I set a challenge to our opposite Ojansivu and he responded with a great match. Even defensively, which is not his strength, he was very good.
