The Johnnie wrestling team travels to Illinois for Elmhurst’s Al Hanke Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.
Saint John’s split a triangular Tuesday night (Jan. 8) in Grand Rapids. The Johnnies started the evening with a 29-20 loss to NAIA Jamestown (N.D.) but took advantage of five forfeits in a 33-17 win over host Itasca C.C. in the nightcap.
Freshman Jacob Scherber (Buffalo, Minn.) improved to 16-9 on the year with a pin against the Jimmies and an 11-5 decision. Freshman Josh Clark (Fridley, Minn./Totino-Grace) was the other Johnnie with two wins (major decision and forfeit) on the night.
Junior Noah Becker (Browerville, Minn.), who boasts a 16-2 record at 133 pounds with wins in 14 of his last 15 matches, did not wrestle.
Junior Dominic Skawiniak (Rogers, Minn.) bumped up to 197 pounds, in place of senior Luke Dodd (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview), and went 1-1 with a narrow 3-2 loss to 10th-ranked (NAIA) Matt Hernandez of Jamestown.
WHO WILL BE THERE: In addition to the Johnnies and host Bluejays, other schools scheduled to compete Saturday in Illinois include Adrian (Mich.), Chicago (Ill.), Concordia (Wis.), Harper (Ill.), Joliet J.C. (Ill.), Lincoln (Ill.), Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.), North Central (Ill.), Triton (Ill.) and Wisconsin-Whitewater.

AND FOR SJU: The Johnnies are scheduled to have 13 wrestlers participating Saturday: Becker, Dodd, Scherber, Skawiniak, freshman Josh Clark (Fridley, Minn./Totino-Grace), junior Dan Gainer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), junior Anthony Hennen (Cologne, Minn./Norwood-Young American), freshman Joe Hennen (Cologne, Minn./Norwood-Young America), freshman Caleb Jungling (Anoka, Minn.), junior Andrew Smith (Amery, Wis.), junior Quincy Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) and freshman Zack Zavadil (Clearwater, Minn./Monticello). Junior Jerod Novak (Aitkin, Minn.) had knee surgery in the fall and is expected to make his 2018-19 debut Saturday.
