Cedar Rapids, Iowa — Minnesota State wrestling advanced George Farmah to the finals of the 133-pound weight class while Seth Elwood and Zach Johnston came away from the Wrestling Championships as All-Americans.
Taking on the No. 1 rated Airk Furseth (UW-Parkside) in the semifinal match at 133-pounds, George Farmah jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period gaining an early takedown and near fall. Farmah continued to be aggressive in the second period and extended his lead with a single leg takedown. Furseth came within a single point of tying the match at 6-5 in the third period but a takedown in the final minute by Farmah provided the distance he needed to claim a 9-7 decision over the wrestler from Parkside.
Farmah will next wrestle in the finals of the 133-pound weight class this evening at 7:00 pm against Upper Iowa’s Josh Walker. The two wrestlers have met on multiple occasions this season and most recently were matched up against one another in the finals of the regional championship. Farmah is the first Minnesota State wrestler to reach the finals of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships since Maverick heavyweight Malcolm Allen placed second two years ago in the 2015-16 season.
Seth Elwood took the mat against No. 10 Shane Ruhnke of Millersville in his first match of the day. Elwood trialed 5-1 in the match after the first period and was unable to make up the difference, dropping the result by a score of 14-6. In the seventh-place match against No. 9 Devin Austin (Pitt-Johnstown) Elwood started quickly with a takedown in the opening moments to set the pace. Austin tied the match at 2-2 midway through the second period with an escape and rode out the third period to top Elwood 3-2. The eighth-place finish gained Elwood All-American status for the first time in his career as the Junior finished his first season for the Mavericks with a 16-11 record and a Regional Championship.
Zach Johnston fell to No. 6 Kolton Eischens in his first match of the day at 174-pounds. Both wrestlers scored near fall points in the first period before Eischens gained the result by fall in 2:39. Wrestling in the seventh-place match against No. 9 Zach Stodden of Nebraska Kearny, Johnston earned three takedowns and an escape in the first two periods to lead 7-3 heading into the third. The sophomore finished the match confidently, winning a 12-5 decision, and earning All-American status with his seventh-place finish. Johnston completed his season with a 24-8 record and led all Mavericks with 18 decision victories this year.
As a team, the Mavericks currently are placed 11th with 30.5 total team points.
