FARGO, N.D. – The No. 25-ranked North Dakota State wrestling team posted wins in four of the final five weight classes to defeat Utah Valley University 18-15 in a Western Wrestling Conference dual on Friday evening in the Bison Sports Arena.

NDSU (8-8, 3-0 WWC) remained unbeaten in conference action with two duals remaining on the regular season schedule.

Utah Valley (5-3, 2-2 WWC) saw its four-dual winning streak snapped.

The Wolverines forfeited to No. 9 Trent Sprenkle at 125 pounds to open the dual, but Utah Valley responded with decisions in each of the next four matches to build a 12-6 lead.

Chasen Tolbert recorded a 5-0 decision over NDSU’s Josh Rodriguez at 133 pounds, and Utah Valley scored a 7-5 decision from Avery Garner over Mark Erickson at 141 pounds. At 149 and 157 pounds, Utah Valley received wins from Josh Wilson and Ethan Smith.

No. 6 Steven Monk started the momentum back in NDSU’s favor with a 2-0 decision at 165 pounds, and at 174 pounds the Bison used a familiar face in a new weight class to earn a victory.

Redshirt freshman Hayden Zillmer, who had only wrestled at 157 pounds this season and hadn’t had a match since Dec. 30, filled in for the regular at 174 pounds, Kurtis Julson. Zillmer scored an escape and two takedowns in the third period for a 5-4 decision over Monte Schmalhaus to even the team score at 12-12.

Seniors Mac Stoll and Kallen Kleinschmidt both posted 6-1 decisions at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively, to stretch the Bison lead to 18-12 and seal the dual victory.

Utah Valley’s Adam Fager won a 3-2 decision over Evan Knutson at heavyweight.
