Burnsville, Minn. — The Minnesota State wrestling team received 43 points in the initial Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference preseason coaches’ poll as announced by conference officials Friday afternoon. Upper Iowa is picked as the preseason favorite, as they garnered 64 points followed by St. Cloud State with 51 points. MSU has three wrestlers ranked No. 1 in the coaches’ poll.

Junior David Demo (125 lbs) and sophomore Cody Quinn (165 lbs) are each favorites in their respective weight class entering the 2012-13 season. Demo and Quinn each placed seventh at the NCAA Championship en route to All-American honors. Demo recorded a 28-13 record last season, while Quinn finished 23-10.

Junior Brendan Eichmann is the third Maverick tabbed as the preseason favorite at 174 lbs. The Hastings, Minn. native is looking to qualify for the NCAA Championship again after doing so in 2011. Eichmann recorded a 20-14 record last season and placed fifth in Super Region 3.

Rounding out the Mavericks with NCAA Championship experience is senior Aaron Norgren, who has qualified three times. The Good Thunrder, Minn. native redshirted last season and is ranked No. 2 at 184 lbs.

Also ranked in the preseason poll is freshman Alphonso Vruno (133 lbs), sophomore Drew Lexvold (141 lbs), redshirt freshman Thomas Allen (149 lbs), senior Alex Folk (157 lbs), senior Nathan Haynes (197 lbs) and junior Corby Running (285 lbs).

Points are assigned from the top five individuals in each of the 10 weight classes using the following point system in determing team rankings: 1=10 points, 2=7 points, 3=4 pionts, 4=2 points and 5=1 point.

MSU open its season November 8 as they host Waldorf College at 7 p.m.
