The discussion over what to do Ronda Rousey and the RAW Women’s Championship at this year’s WrestleMania has been one of the most hotly debated topics in the wrestling world in recent weeks. Right now the advertised main event will see the UFC icon defend her title against 2019 Royal Rumble winner Becky Lynch, in a match this is expected to be the first women’s main event in WrestleMania history.

However, according to Dave Meltzer via Wrestling Observer Radio, the current plan for this year’s main event is still to involve Charlotte Flair into the mix, making the bout a triple threat. While some fans are going to be understandable angered by this news, WWE’s reasoning for doing so does make a great deal of sense.

Originally, the rematch between Rousey and Flair was supposed to take place at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view in January. Becky would then win the Rumble match, as she did, and go on to face the champion in a singles match on the Grandest Stage of Them All. However, after the Rousey/Flair match received so much positive attention, and the tremendous amount of heat that came off their angle at Survivor Series, the decision was made to hold off and add Charlotte to the bout at WrestleMania instead.

The idea was that the program between Rousey and Becky is red hot, the program between Rousey and Charlotte is red hot, and the eternal rivalry between Becky and Charlotte is really what started all of this — why not throw them all together at WrestleMania?

Right now it’s expected that the ladies will go on last this April. It’s worth noting that the match between Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins for the Universal Championship is also being referred to as a “main event”. Regardless of who ends up in that coveted spot, Vince McMahon does not generally set the match order in stone until the week of the show, so anything can change.
