The road to WrestleMania 31 was all about Roman Reigns finally defeating Brock Lesnar to cement himself as the top dog in the WWE by winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the grandest stage of them all. Boy, doesn’t that sound familiar? It only took them three additional years to… well, do absolutely nothing, considering they still haven’t pulled that trigger.
When Seth Rollins unexpectedly cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to effectively steal the title in the main event of WrestleMania, they had to do something big to get Roman his heat back. I guess they figured there’s nothing “bigger” than an angry 500-pound giant, and thus a short feud with the Big Show began.
At the end of the day, this Last Man Standing match was so much better than it had any right to be. Looking back at Big Show’s history of pay-per-view matches, I would make a case that this is actually his career high performance in a singles bout. It was not unlike some of Reigns’ over-the-top battles against Braun Strowman that would come two years later.
It was at this very moment where I realized the string of excellent matches that Roman had put on over his short time in a WWE ring were not a fluke at all. People had been saying basically since he arrived that he was “overrated” or only as good as the opponents that were allegedly “carrying” him from great performance to great performance. But if you can pull a classic match out of the Big Show at this stage in his career – don’t get me wrong, I’m a lifelong fan of the big man – you really don’t have anything to prove to anyone, ever.
