Speaking on the L’Équipe channel, journalist Mathieu Grégoire revealed that West Ham United have joined the race to sign Olympique de Marseille midfielder Mattéo Guendouzi (23).
Guendouzi has blossomed at Les Phocéens since arriving from Arsenal. After playing a starring role in the side that reached the Champions League this season, Guendouzi earned his place in the France national team and featured in Les Bleus’ recent run to the World Cup final.
Those performances, but also performances at club level, have garnered the attention of English clubs that are keen on bringing him back to the Premier League. Aston Villa have long since been linked with making a move for the midfielder this month, and according to Foot Mercato, he is the Midlands club’s priority signing.

However, there is no guarantee that he would accept a move to Aston Villa. Foot Mercato have reported that, out of an attachment to Marseille, Guendouzi could “politely reject” Aston Villa’s advances. Whilst the Frenchman isn’t necessarily opposed to a return to the Premier League, he isn’t keen on a move to a mid-table side.
That could also prove problematic for West Ham, who are also interested in Guendouzi, according to Grégoire. In a segment, transcribed by Goal, the journalist said, “Regarding Guendouzi, as we know, English clubs like Aston Villa and West Ham are ready to make big offers, but current;y, we’re not at that point.”
