French referees Stéphanie Frappart and Clément Turpin have refereed their final games in the World Cup, a consequence of France’s progression to the semi-finals of the tournament in Qatar.
In order to avoid suspicions of favouritism towards France, who will face Morocco in the semi-final on Wednesday, both Frappart and Turpin’s involvement in the World Cup is over. Frappart made history in the tournament, becoming the first woman to referee a men’s World Cup game when she officiated the match between Germany and Costa Rica in the group stages in November.

However, the success of the national team is to the detriment of the Ligue 1 officials. 12 referees have been retained for the remainder of the competition, which comprises of two semi-finals, a third-place play-off and the final, which will take place on 18th December. Wilton Sampaio, referee of the quarter-final between France and England is one of those that has been retained by FIFA.
