Lionel Messi, now 35, parted ways with Barcelona to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in the summer of 2021.
Although his arrival has strengthened PSG’s collective prowess to a significant extent and almost ended the chances for others to compete for the Ligue 1 title, Marseille president Pablo Longoria believes that it has benefitted Ligue 1 from a broader perspective.
In an interview with MARCA, Longoria explained how Messi’s arrival has yielded fruits for the league from a commercial point of view. Elaborating on the business side and the overall excitement of fans around arguably the best players of this generation, the club chief said:
“It attracts, there is a collective interest, there is no doubt. It has allowed the league to have a strategic partner with CVC Capital (the Luxembourg-based company that invested 1.5 billion euros in exchange for 13% of the LFP’s commercial rights). It has an influence. It is important that French football changes dimension.”
