As reported by L’Équipe, a French socio of Barcelona has initiated legal proceedings over Lionel Messi’s free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain last summer with the European Court of Justice in Luxemburg.
The 23-year-old law student, Issam Abdelmouine, is a former legal assistant of Juan Branco, the controversial French lawyer who is notably representing La Liga in their efforts to get Kylian Mbappé’s Paris Saint-Germain contract extension overturned.
Having been upset about the Argentine’s departure, Abdelmouine decided to take action and filed a legal complaint with the European Commission. He believes that PSG had an advantage with regard to fair play rules, which in the post-pandemic time period were left up to individual FAs.
Arguing that La Liga’s rules were stricter – a wage bill cap for example – he believes that the conditions PSG were able to sign Messi in effect amount to “illegal state aid”. The initial complaint was rejected at the start of September 2021, and the Barcelona fan has now decided to take it up with the European Court of Justice.
The Court has told L’Équipe that neither PSG nor Lionel Messi are being represented, and that the case is only indirectly linked to them. Abdelmouine has claimed that the scope of the proceedings go beyond Messi’s transfer now, and seek to regulate football in a fairer manner. A decision will be made within the next few weeks.
