Borthwick remains the front-runner to take over as England’s head coach following Eddie Jones’ departure, but he remains tight-lipped about his future.
Unable to provide clarity
The 43-year-old served under Eddie Jones for both Japan and England as his forwards coach between 2012 and 2020 before guiding the Tigers to the Premiership title last season.
He was faced with further questioning about his future again this week but insisted that his sole focus is Leicester’s Champions Cup tie against Clermont at Welford Road.
“I know I’m coaching here this weekend against Clermont on Saturday,” he replied when asked if he was able to rule himself out of contention for the England role.
“And that’s what I am working towards. I’d love to give you clarity of everything going forward. Unfortunately, I can’t.
Giving his best for Leicester
Borthwick added that he is concentrating on the Tigers for the time being and emphasised his commitment to the players.
“For me, all I do is try to concentrate on giving the best for this team and these players that I care for very deeply,” he added.
“I will try and coach them to the best level I possibly can.”
Welford Road fortress
Leicester Tigers head into their clash with Clermont off the back of a 17-23 away win over Ospreys after Anthony Watson scored a stunning solo try to win the match for the Premiership side.
While Clermont secured a superb 24-14 come-from-behind win over the Stormers, they will be well aware of Leicester’s threat at home.
Borthwick’s charges are currently on a 17-game winning streak at Welford Road, which stretches back to September last year. However, the Tigers last played a competitive home match at the ground in October.
