Ospreys fly-half Jack Walsh found himself in the wars in the United Rugby Championship clash against the Dragons as he copped three ugly tackles.

Saturday’s Welsh derby fixture in Swansea saw the home pivot floored on three separate occasions, which resulted in a yellow and red card for the Dragons.

No card for Fairbrother

Tighthead prop Lloyd Fairbrother was the first to put a late hit on Walsh that saw him avoid a card from referee Jaco Peyper, which was a surprising call.

However, there was no such luck for Dragons blindside flank Ross Moriarty, whose late shoulder charge left the South African official with little option.

Down to 14 men for 10 minutes, the visitors didn’t improve their discipline as after the interval came the worst hit of the three.

With Walsh waiting for a pull-back pass from Kieran Williams, the fly-half received it and quickly offloaded to Luke Morgan, only to be hit late yet again.

Play was allowed to continue and, despite having their number 10 floored, Ospreys were able to regroup and get over through number eight Morgan Morris.

Once the game was halted, referee Peyper singled out the offender, New Zealander Sio Tomkinson, for the head high tackle and issued him with a red card.

Ospreys ran in a further two tries following the Tomkinson’s sending off with Iestyn Hopkins and the aforementioned Williams dotting down.

Walsh kicked eight points

First-half tries from the hosts came via Nicky Smith and Dan Lydiate while Walsh ended the match with eight points and Luke Scully kicked four off the tee.

Dragons’ points came via a Jordan Williams crossing and a late penalty try, with Will Reed slotting a drop-goal and Angus O’Brien sending over a penalty.

The 37-18 URC victory for the Ospreys sees them climb one place to 12th, with the Dragons remaining second bottom in 15th after winning just three games.

Ospreys will now turn their attention to a Champions Cup knockout date away at Saracens on Sunday while Dragons head to Glasgow in the Challenge Cup.
