The Chennai Super Kings pipped Gujarat Titans in the 2023 Indian Premier League final to win their fifth title, thanks to a Ravindra Jadeja boundary on the last ball. A fifty title under the captainship of MS Dhoni.
The former India captain however, was unable to leave a mark with the bat as he was dismissed by former CSK bowler Mohit Sharma for a first ball duck in the final.
Former India captain turned broadcaster Sunil Gavaskar would tell Sports Tak, “If he had been there to hit the winning runs, it would have been like a cherry on the top. But at the end of the day, being the team-man that he is, he would be very happy. He might have got out first ball, but his team went on to win the title and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters. Whether you score hundreds, take five wickets if your team loses, there is no fun. But if you score zero or might be smashed for 40-50 runs, if your team wins, that is huge.”

“A tournament like this can take a heavy toll on your physical and mental energy. It’s only fair for any big decision to be taken that you give yourself a bit of time after the tournament is over. My belief is that he will give himself a bit of time, sit down with his near and dear ones, and have a chat about what could be done. So, we can certainly expect a decision sooner rather than later,” Gavaskar added.
The final marked a 10th for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, leading to their joint highest title count with Mumbai Indians.
Earlier, Chennai Super Kings won the toss and opted to field first after the IPL 2023 final was move to the reserved day following a washed out Sunday in Ahmedabad. Powered by Sai Sudharsan’s 96, the Gujarat Titans posted 214/4 in their 20 overs before rain halted play in the first over of the CSK innings.
The game would be reduced to a 15 overs affair, with the revised total now 171. Following a powerful opening stand between Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu and Shivam Dube added vital contributions in the middle before Jadeja sealed the deal on the last ball.
