Daniel Rona was on the end of an outstanding try in the Chiefs’ 33-17 win against the Hurricanes in Super Rugby Pacific on Saturday.

The competition leaders decided to run the ball from deep and talented star Shaun Stevenson found some space down the right-hand side.

With the defenders covering across, the full-back shovelled the ball to Emoni Narawa on his right, who did not have much time. Somehow the wing had the presence of mind to send a diagonal grubber through to avoid going into touch and play Rona in, who dived on the ball to complete a fine score.

Rona’s score broke the deadlock in the ninth minute, with fly-half Damian McKenzie missing the conversion. However, the Hurricanes responded quickly with Devan Flanders scoring only three minutes later as centre Jordie Barrett added the extras.

Barrett would add three more from the tee in the 20th minute before Cam Roigard continued his try-scoring form around the half-hour mark almost immediately after a McKenzie penalty.

There would be no further scores in the first period until Pita Gus Sowkula barged the door down and crossed for the Chiefs in the 47th minute. McKenzie made no mistake from the tee for the conversion.

The fly-half kicked two penalties on either side of the 65th minute, with Cortez Ratima’s converted try taking the Chiefs out to a good lead.

McKenzie would round out the game with a try of his own as the Chiefs remain unbeaten in the 2023 Super Rugby Pacific.
