Christian "Chucho" Benitez, the Ecuadorian striker who claimed the last 3 Liga MX scoring titles and helped Club America win their first league crown in nearly a decade, died in a tragic series of events that unfolded in a Qatari hospital this past Monday. He is survived by his wife and two children.
After helping America lift the trophy, Benitez agreed to be transferred to El Jaish in the Qatari League, where he played his first match hours before arriving at the hospital with severe abdominal pains.
Liga MX has been paying tribute with a moment of silence before each of their midweek fixtures, which includes Club America's Liga MX debut tonight at Leon. Birmingham, where Benitez played for a spell a few years ago, will also plan a tribute.
The world soccer community mourns the loss of one of its greatest talents and brightest lights.
