After losses like the Los Angeles Lakers suffered Sunday night at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers (at home, no less), the search for solutions reaches a pinnacle. The problem with that search all too often, however, is that it tends to start with too narrow a focus. On today’s episode of the Locked on Lakers podcast, I discuss that and plenty more.
I started the show by reacting to the Lakers finding rock bottom of this season. Cleveland has lost their last 12 and are missing important parts of its own roster. There was no excuse for this loss, and each of the concerns about this team showed their ugly faces. Lack of execution, inconsistent pace, defensive lapses, shooting woes — you name it, the Lakers struggled with it. And once again, those problems were all very predictable.
The problem starts higher than with the coach or any players. This remains a flawed roster lacking severely in very important aspects of the game. If we’re to find out Magic Johnson is annoyed or frustrated with how Luke Walton manages it, we should also hear about how annoyed he is with himself for the hatchet job he did in piecing said roster together.
From there, crap rolls downhill. If you found yourself annoyed once again by the Lakers missing free throw after free throw, you have to be willing to admit that merely taking more of them in practice is too shallow a fix. Any time spent repeating the same bad habits that got the Lakers here is time spent furthering the issue, not fixing it.
After a first segment discussing those concerns and more, I opened up the mailbag to answer your questions. Topics included: Potential additions to the staff, Kyle Kuzma’s production, a Phil Jackson statue and plenty more.
