The Big Ten recognized winter sport student-athletes for their achievement in the classroom by announcing its Academic All-Big Ten honors on Wednesday. Among the 79 Gopher student-athletes to earn recognition from the conference, eight are familiar faces for the Gopher wrestling room: James Berg, Carson Brolsma, Michael Kroells, Ethan Lizak, Brett Pfarr, Chris Pfarr, Gannon Volk and Nick Wanzek.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

With their honors this year, seniors Kroells and Pfarr match their head coach, Brandon Eggum, as four-timers in the world of Academic All-Big Ten. While Eggum earned his degree in applied economics, Kroells will graduate this spring with a degree in aerospace engineering, while Pfarr’s will be in agricultural and food business management.

A pair of redshirt juniors picked up their third awards this year, with the younger Pfarr in the same major as his older brother, and Wanzek following in Eggum’s footsteps by majoring in applied econ.

A pair of redshirt sophomores both majoring in kinesiology, Volk and Lizak, each earned their first conference academic honor this year. Berg (applied economics) and Brolsma (undeclared), each earned their first this year as redshirt freshmen.
