MOORHEAD, Minn. – On the first day of the NCAA Division II Super Region 3 Tournament, the Minnesota State wrestling team advanced eight wrestlers to the second day of the competition.

Paul Selman (So., 133 lbs.) started his day with a 16-0 technical fall against Jordan Biehn (SMSU) before dropping a major decision to Blake Bosch (Moorhead). Selman will wrestle Saturday morning after defeating Mike Brown (Drury University) by a 3-2 decision and finishing 2-1 Friday.

Louie Sanders (R-Fr., 141 lbs.) won by fall in 2:33 over Rafael Lopez (Truman) in his first match. Sanders was defeated in the quarterfinal match by Jarred Oftedahl (St. Cloud State) by a fall in 3:39. In his final match of the day Sanders won a 7-5 decision over Austin Jordan (Augustana) to advance to day two.

Daniel Close (So., 149 lbs.) was 2-1 in Friday’s matches. Close took a narrow 1-0 decision against Cody Haugen (Minot) in his first match of the day. Close lost a 3-1 decision against James Pleski (St. Cloud State) in the quarterfinal match. The Ottawa, Ill. Native responded with a 9-0 major decision over Hunter Eckert (Mary).

Dylan Herman (Jr., 157 lbs.) posted a 2-0 record Friday, recording two pins in the process. Herman registered a fall against Tim Bogar (Lindenwood) in 1:35 in his first match. In the quarterfinals Herman gained his second pin of the day against Tyler Nation (Augustana) with a fall in 5:37.

Adam Cooling (Sr., 174 lbs.) received a bye in the first round to start his regional tournament. In his quarterfinal match-up, Cooling defeated Adam Blees (Moorhead) by a 3-2 decision to advance to the semifinals.

Corey Abernathy (Jr., 184 lbs.) finished with a 2-0 record Friday. Abernathy won a 16-0 technical fall in the first round against Jules Joseph (Truman) and in the quarterfinal won by decision over Nick Baumler (Upper Iowa) 4-3.

Matthew Blome (Fr., 197 lbs.) won by fall in 2:51 over Cody Anderson (Moorhead) in his first match of the tournament. Blome lost by decision in the quarterfinals before responding with an impressive 17-0 technical fall over Briley Crissler (Minot) to finish day one of regionals with a 2-1 record.

Chris Zimmer (Jr., 285 lbs.) will wrestle in Saturday’s matches after finishing 2-1. Zimmer received a bye in the first round Friday before falling to the #1 wrestler in the nation at 285, Austin Goergen (St. Cloud State) in the quarterfinals. Zimmer advanced to day two with a 3-1 decision against Andrew Peterson (SMSU) in the final match for the Mavericks Friday.

Andrew McFall (R-Fr., 125 lbs.) and Zach Johnston (Fr., 165 lbs.) saw their seasons come to an end Friday after finishing with 1-2 records.

Wrestling will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday with the semi-final matches and wrestle-backs while the 1st, 3rd, and 5th place matches will begin at 4:00 p.m.
