As the team did last season, Minnesota will kick off the 2016-17 campaign by sending almost its entire roster of wrestlers to the Warren Williamson / Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D. on Sunday. Minnesota had 38 different wrestlers across all 10 weights in last year’s brackets, and similar numbers can be expected tomorrow.
The Gophers captured three individual titles at last year’s event: Tommy Thorn (141), Brett Pfarr (197) and Michael Kroells (285). Pfarr will not be in action on Sunday, as he will compete Saturday night at the NWCA All-Star Classic in Cleveland, Ohio.
Along with those three titles, Minnesota had seven additional top-three finishers. Brandon Kingsley (157) and Rylee Streifel (285) each finished as runners-up, while Sam Brancale (133), Fredy Stroker (149), Larry Early III (157), Nick Wanzek (174) and Chris Pfarr (184) all took third.
Action is set to get underway from Frost Arena at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning. Fans can follow live stats for all tournament matches at TrackWrestling.com.
