MOORHEAD, Minn. — After a layoff of nearly a month, the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team is back in action on Saturday when it competes at the Grand Canyon Duals in Phoenix, Ariz. The Dragons (2-1 duals) will compete in four duals as part of the event.

MSUM will face California Baptist at 10 a.m. Central time on Saturday, and then follow with duals against Colorado School of Mines (11:45 a.m.), Simon Fraser (1:30 p.m.) and Grand Canyon University (3:15 p.m.)

MSUM’s last competition was on Dec. 11, 2012 when it lost a tough match to Division III power Augsburg, 21-16.

About MSUM
The Dragons lost to Augsburg, 21-16 on Dec. 11. Junior Matt Lewellen won by major decision to lead the Dragons, while senior Kerron Williams and juniors Casey Williams and Angel Vega and sophomore Phillippe Walker all won by decision.

Vega (141 pounds) leads the Dragons with a 14-6 mark, while sophomore Gerad Fugleberg (285) is at 11-6. Casey Williams (149 pounds) is 9-3 on the year, while senior Kerron Williams (165) is at 5-2. As a team, the Dragons have 27 pins, 16 wins by major decision and four technical falls.

Kris Nelson is in his fourth season as MSUM’s head coach with a record of 17-29 at the school.

About California Baptist
California Baptist is 2-2 on the season. The Lancers will face Colorado School of Mines in a dual prior to facing MSUM. In their last action, they fell to Division I foe Cal Poly, 27-19 on Dec. 7. The team’s top two wrestlers in 2012-13 have been Zach Merrill, who is 14-5 at 285 pounds, while Bradford Gerl is 13-4 at 141 pounds.

About Colorado School of Mines
The Orediggers have not competed in a dual so far in 2012-13 but will face California Baptist prior to competing at the GCD. Freshman John Crowley (157 pounds) leads CSM with a 16-5 record, while freshman Luis Gurule (125 pounds) is at 16-8.

About Simon Fraser
Simon Fraser is 1-4 in duals. The Clan finished second at the Battle of the Rockies in its final action prior to the holiday break.

About Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon is 1-2 in duals on the season. The Antelopes beat Embry-Riddle, 25-15 in their last dual action on Dec. 7. GCU is led by heavyweight Tyrell Fortunte, who is 17-1 on the year, while Brett Sanchez is 11-6.
