Four Pins Help MSUM Wrestlers Down Dickinson State, 33-9
MOORHEAD, Minn. — Four wins by fall helped the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team roll to a 33-9 win over Dickinson State in a nonconference dual Friday afternoon at Alex Nemzek Hall in Moorhead, Minn.
The Dragons (1-0) got pins from freshman Tyler Tischer, junior Angel Vega, redshirt freshman Jesse Munos and junior Matt Lewellen on their way to the win.
“It was a great first dual for us,” MSUM head coach Kris Nelson said “It was a good test to see where we were at. Our conditioning looked great. Our athletes wrestled hard. We wrestled through the whistle. All of our guys were on the offensive and looking to score points.”
After losing by decision in the first match, the Dragons came back with back-to-back falls.
Freshman Tyler Tischer had an impressive showing at 133. He was aggressive from the start, building a 6-2 lead after one period. He then received three points on a near fall and moments later, finished off the win by fall in 4:21 to give the Dragons a 6-3 lead.
Tischer scored first, earning a takedown to take a 2-0 lead. Delp recorded two more reversals in the first frame on his way to a 6-2 lead.
“Tischer had a great Bison Open. We’re liking what we’re seeing out of him,” Nelson said.
Vega followed with a win in impressive fashion. After trailing 2-1 early, he stormed back to take control and recorded a fall in 3:43 over Nestor Ruelas at 141 pounds, bringing the Dragon lead to 12-3.
“Vega, he keeps going,” Nelson said. “Even if he falls behind early, he stays after it.”
At 149, junior Mariano Portillo battled back from a 6-2 deficit to tie things up at 6-6, but a late takedown was the difference as he fell to DSU’s Brad Steele, 8-6 as the Bluehawks climbed within 12-6 in the dual.
The Dragons rebounded with a hard-fought 6-4 decision win by junior Casey Williams — who was wrestling up a weight — at 157 pounds to push their lead back to 15-6. At 165, senior Kerron Williams controlled his match much of the way on his way to an 8-2 win as the Dragons pushed their advantage in the dual to 18-6.
MSUM’s third win by fall came at 174, as redshirt freshman Jesse Munos recorded a impressive victory. He dominated Dickinson’s Chris Brusato to win by fall in 2:35 as the Dragons took control of the dual at 24-6. Munos was wrestling up a weight at 174.
Dickinson State came back with a 5-0 decision win at 184 to climb within 24-9.
At 197, Matt Lewellen picked up MSUM’s fourth pin of the day with a win by fall in 5:44 to help the Dragons put the match well out of reach at 30-9. Lewellen was also wrestling up a weight from his normal 184.
“It was great to see these guys are willing to do things for their team,” Nelson said.
Sophomore Gerad Fugleberg capped off the dual with a 2-0 win at heavyweight.
The Dragons are at the Finn Grinaker Open at Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday.
