I’m terrible at writing intros. It’s pretty simple, can we just do the thing?
I decided on a simple four-star system to represent each Superstar’s estimated odds of winning the 2020 Royal Rumble match. I tossed around a half dozen other options, but to be honest I’m still not really sure how actual betting odds work, and everything else seemed needlessly complicated. Four stars. The more stars, the better their chance.
Now, to be clear I’m not going through every single member of the roster. It’s far too big and I will 100% lose interest before finishing this piece if I have to come up with 15 different polite ways of saying “Zack Ryder has absolutely no chance of winning the Royal Rumble, but hey remember when he did a cool thing that one time?” I’m not doing it and you can’t make me.
Four stars. One through four. If they’re on the list at all they have at least some chance of winning, or at the very least are notable enough to spend time talking about. Let’s go!
BROCK LESNAR | ****
Let’s get the Big Bad out of the way first. I’m going all-in on Brock Lesnar winning the Royal Rumble. The simple fact that they’re making a point to involve him as the reigning WWE Champion, and make a big deal about it, means they have at least some sort of story-driven plan for him. I suppose it’s just as likely he gets eliminated and it sets up his WrestleMania match regardless, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years it’s that betting against Brock Lesnar is a really, really stupid thing to do.

TYSON FURY | *
The only reason I’m even addressing this is that I’ve seen a bunch of people talk about Tyson Fury as an option to win the Rumble and face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania. I think it’s extremely unlikely. More importantly – who actually wants to see that match? No offense to Fury, who appeared to have had a great time working with Braun Strowman, and he clearly tried hard and took it seriously, there are just plenty of full-time talents on the roster who I’d rather see in the spot.
CAIN VELASQUEZ | **
See: Tyson Fury. There’s a bit more merit to Velasquez winning now that he’s openly stated that he’ll be in the match (and, ya know, because he’s actually a signed member of the WWE roster). I really don’t see fans getting behind a Lesnar/Velasquez rematch at WrestleMania, especially one without Rey Mysterio involved. Seems like that ship has sailed. I’ll still give Cain two stars because he’s paid like a top guy, making him a top guy, and a Rumble win doesn’t necessarily guarantee he’ll face Lesnar in the end.
BRAY WYATT / THE FIEND | **
Here’s an idea. What if WWE is only making a big deal out of Brock Lesnar entering the Royal Rumble as champion because he’s a red herring and it’s actually The Fiend, as Universal Champion, who wins the match?
KEVIN OWENS | ****
When Seth Rollins transitioned into the top heel on Monday Night Raw, Kevin Owens very immediately and effortlessly slid into the role of the show’s top babyface. Surprise of all surprises, the dude is over as hell. Remember that a year ago the plan was to bring back Owens as the challenger for Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania, using the stunner and depicted as the “every man” super babyface. They were going to pull the trigger with him then, and I think there’s a very good chance they’ll fire that shot this year instead. KO is currently heavily entrenched in a thing with Rollins and his new goon squad, but April’s not next week. They have time. Honestly, I just really, really want Brock Lesnar vs. Kevin Owens at WrestleMania.
